About the Author

Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783-1872) holds a unique position in the life and culture of Denmark. His centenary in 1983 was celebrated as a major national event. Not only is he one of the greatest poets in the Danish language, as a churchman he greatly inspired the religious life of the country through his hymns, sermons and writings on church life and religious freedom. Grundtvig's ideas of a general education free for all the youth of the nation in people's high schools, with a curriculum based on the mother tongue and the national cultural heritage, have left an indelible mark on the culture and public life of Denmark.
