About this Book

The relationship between law and religion in the Old and New Testament has become en important focus of interest in biblical studies. This symposium of thirteen essays by distinguished scholars provides an overview of the current debate. Each essay treats a particular topic in some depth, while making a contribution to its own subject, thus becoming part of the debate itself. The essays are grouped into three sections:

1. The Law in Israelite Religion touches on the foundation of the connection between law and religion in ancient Israel, the decisive influence of the Deuteronomic reform and the radical new understanding now emerging of the later development in Judaism of the New Testament Period.

2. The Law in the Jesus Tradition illustrates the contemporary challenge to the conventional picture of Jesus and the Law, a central area of debate in New Testament studies.

3. The Law in Paul and the Apostolic Tradition challenges the conventional picture of Paul and follows through with two studies of post-Pauline developments.
