The outbreak of war in 1914 marked the disappearance of the colourful uniforms which had distinguished the regiments of the British Army for some three hundred years. The splendid full dress uniforms of the British Army, now so rarely seen, were a familiar sight prior to the Great War. Once, a soldier's unit or branch of the service could be recognised from his dress: the colour of his tunic, the shape of his head-dress, the presence or otherwise of characteristic embroidery, cords and chains. Today such knowledge is largely confined to individual enthusiasts.

Through his meticulous and beautiful paintings, Lieutenant Colonel MacLeod has created a permanent record of the ceremony, grace and dignity of the last of the British Army's full dress, now only used in military tattoos and other ceremonial occasions.

About the Author

Lieutenant-Colonel Olaf MacLeod, late of Coke's Rifles, Frontier Force, Indian Army, for many years specialised in the intricacies of military uniforms. Collectors all over the world have appreciated his military models and pictures, and his paintings regularly featured in the programme for the Military Tattoo at the Edinburgh Festival.

For many years Olaf MacLeod painstakingly researched this history of uniforms, and has provided a fine memorial to the great days of full dress uniform in the British Army. Unfortunately Olaf MacLeod died before the book was published. It is hoped that this book will be a fitting memorial. He lived in Strathpeffer, Ross-shire.
