About this Book

Extramural: Literature and Lifelong Learning is an account of the author's time teaching literature at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continued Education. It makes the case that adult education is of continued relevance despite increasing marginalisation and closure. The Institute's founder, James Stuart, had a bold and idealistic vision of broadening education from the elite confines of the Oxbridge colleges to all of society, envisaging a community of adult learners. Specialising in Literature, the author has built a career on this radical principle, taking up the founder's mantle of acting as a guide and mentor to all those hungry for knowledge and to further an understanding of literature.

Extramural is more than a personal account of a career in education, but an argument for an idea, for the lifelong pursuit of knowledge and the invaluable part that CICE has played in this. A stimulating and engaging exploration of the world of adult literary education, Extramural offers the reader the chance to gain an insight into a world that depends on the support of those participating.

About the Author

Adrian Barlow was formerly Director of Public & Professional Programmes and University Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education. Recently retired, he is now Chairman of the English Association and a Senior Member of Wolfson College, Cambridge. He is series editor of Cambridge Contexts in Literature and his publications include The Great War in British Literature (CUP, 2000) and World and Time: Teaching Literature in Context (2009).

"Extramural is nothing less than a first-hand, definitive celebration of the importance of lifelong learning by a gifted teacher and administrator who wears his own scholarship lightly, delighting, as the best teachers always do, in the fact that 'you are likely to learn as much from your students as they will learn from you'.
