Peter Norris

When Peter Norris first encountered the work of Knighton-Hammond at an art auction it had such a deep impact upon him that he resolved to find out more about the artist. He himself became a collector of Knighton-Hammond’s paintings and has spent several years examining the artist’s correspondence, his memoirs and diaries, as well as interviewing surviving friends and relatives, and poring over newspaper reports and public records. Now, after years of painstaking research in what began as a labour of love, Peter Norris has produced the definitive biography of this sadly neglected artist. He has been greatly assisted in this endeavour both by the artist’s family and by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, who own many of the paintings reproduced here. It is hoped that by making these works available for scrutiny the artist will at last find his rightful place in the history of British art.
